The Causes of Melasma

It is important to understand the causes of melasma, including:

Hormonal changes with high levels of estrogen, resulting in the abnormal stimulation of pigmentation.
Cosmetic whitening creams containing chemicals, preservatives, lead or mercury that could easily increase the production of melasma. The long-term usage of these substances produces sensitive skin, becoming worse over time.
Increased sun exposure during the hours between 10.00am to 2.00pm. Sunlight contains both UV-B and UV-A radiation.
Continuous laser usage, causing dark melasma.
Stress hormones that occur through the pituitary gland, darkening melasma.

Superficial melasma on the epidermis is easier to treat than deep type melasma which the lesion is in the dermal skin layer, however the mixed type is the most difficult to treat. According to medical researches, show that the method of treatments by using pigment removal laser and fractional laser is significantly effective and can lead to less recurrence and bring long lasting satisfy result for patients.
