Sound familiar? Acne treatmentthrough many routes, from every kind of skincare formula to buyingAcne medicationthemselves, or trying to follow the skincare routines of various celebrities, only for the acne to keep coming back. And even when the acne clears, it leaves red marks, dark marks and acne scars behind, which costs people their confidence because the skin looks uneven and far from smooth. In reality each person’s acne differs in its details – what causes it, what it looks like, the condition of the skin, and what care is wanted. It is no surprise, then, that the same treatment may not give the same result for everyone. For this reason, at BSL Clinic we place importance on understanding each individual’s acne so that we can plan theAcne treatmentsuited to each person’s skin and goals, helping reduce the chance of acne returning, caring for acne marks and acne scars comprehensively, while restoring stronger skin and building lasting confidence. It may sound difficult, but in practice many of our patients manage it and end up with stronger, clearer-looking skin, taking pride and pleasure in caring for themselves. First, let us look at the four causes of acne.
BSL Clinic’s principle in acne care is to consider all four main causes, then design an approach that suits each person’s skin, helping acne to settle and the skin overall to look better. The degree of change depends on each person’s skin and how consistently they continue their care.

Reducing blocked pores by rebalancing the skin and caring for it so it gradually looks stronger again. In some cases pores may look tighter and the skin overall smoother.

uses a laser that works on the sebaceous glands beneath the skin to help reduce the activity of some of those glands, which in some people may reduce oiliness alongside skincare following the doctor’s advice.

aims to reduce the bacteria associated with inflammatory acne, together with adjusting skincare habits, to help inflamed acne improve and reduce the chance of further flare-ups. Response will differ from person to person.
In some cases where inflamed acne is large, very painful or at risk of leaving a mark, the doctor may recommendAcne injectionalongside other methods, to help the inflammation settle more quickly.

Hormonal acne is more likely in working-age women than in men, because hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands and give rise to hormonal acne. The approach used addresses the hormonal imbalance itself.

Light therapy is an effective way to treat acne, inflamed skin, sensitive skin, oily skin, dull skin and acne marks. ACNE LIGHT THERAPY uses red light at a wavelength of 633 nanometres – the wavelength that produces red light – which has been adopted for treating acne. This range can reduce P. acnes, the bacterium behind much inflammatory acne, and works well to calm acne inflammation and reduce facial oiliness.3 It also helps stimulate collagen production, allowing the skin to repair itself. Red light therefore suits acne that has left wounds, long-standing chronic acne and acne that has not responded to medication. Used consistently, red LED gives good results: alongside improving acne, it helps restore stronger skin.4

It conditions the skin to be stronger and stimulates new skin formation. This laser works on the sebaceous glands beneath the skin, reducing gland size so fewer new breakouts appear. At BSL we consider the long-term result of reducing acne, so laser treatment can be seen as another way to reduce reliance on oral medication. It restores and conditions the skin, stimulating strong new skin to replace the old, shrinking the sebaceous glands, making acne scars shallower, tightening the appearance of pores and leaving skin smoother – because the laser energy works on the sebaceous glands in the dermis, reducing their activity. Treating heat rash acne Comedonal and inflammatory acne – “existing acne improves, with a lower chance of new breakouts” – and acne scars may also appear shallower.5,6 Many people ask whether laser treatment thins the skin, and what makes acne laser treatment at BSL Clinic different. The answer is that with non-ablative laser, the doctor sets the energy so that it works at the skin layer where the problem lies (the dermis), treating the cause of the acne – “focusing on stimulating strong new skin to replace old, deteriorated skin”. BSL’s doctors understand how to set laser energy so that the result is effective.7,8

The 1726 nm Accure & AviClear Program is another option for managing acne, supported by research data and now widely offered. It “addresses acne at its source” by targeting the sebaceous gland, the producer of the oil beneath the skin that is directly involved in acne formation, helping to reduce gland activity and lower the chance of acne returning. Because the energy is directed mainly at the intended skin layer, it also helps reduce the risk of irritating the surface and surrounding areas.
For skin with red or dark acne marks, lasers that work primarily on melanin pigment may be considered alongside other skin care. In some cases acne marks gradually appear to fade when treated at intervals according to the plan the doctor has set. How much the marks fade, and how many sessions are needed, will differ from person to person.

For anyone concerned about red or dark acne marks, pigment lasers may be one of the options the doctor considers, with the aim of fading marks faster than waiting for them to clear on their own. The result and the speed at which marks change will vary according to each person’s skin and their aftercare.

For anyone still unsure about acne scar treatment and where to have it done, with Fraxel Dual Program and the PicoWay Resolve programmes (Program PicoWay Resolve 1064 nm and Program PicoWay Resolve 532 nm⁹˒ ¹⁰), which we have chosen for treating acne scars, uneven skin texture and enlarged pores. The advantage of the acne scar and enlarged pore programme at BSL Clinic is that it can stimulate collagen in both skin layers – the epidermis and the dermis – so acne scars look shallower. Today it is also combined with fine needles and RF energy to help reduce fibrous tissue beneath the skin, which improves results on acne scars further while helping restore firmer, stronger skin and a more defined facial contour.
This combined acne scar programme is designed to work across several skin layers, both at the surface and in the fat layer beneath, to reduce fibrous tissue and support the formation of new tissue. In some cases pores may look tighter and the overall texture more even with continued treatment.

BSL Clinic’s approach to acne is based on each person’s symptoms and the cause of their acne, after which a treatment plan is agreed between the doctor and the patient. The aim is to help acne settle gradually and to let you continue caring for your skin properly at home. The degree of change and the confidence gained will differ from person to person.

Before extraction, the face is cleansed, comedones are cleared and numbing cream is applied, ahead of the laser acne or acne scar treatment.

The doctor first assesses the cause and character of each person’s acne and acne scars, then selects a suitable type of laser and adjusts the energy to suit the skin – keeping the treatment goal and the patient’s comfort foremost. Response to treatment may differ from case to case.

As acne and acne marks gradually improve, many people feel more at ease with their skin and more confident in daily life. The degree of change in appearance and in how you feel will, however, differ from person to person.
Acne treatment at BSL Clinic begins with the doctor assessing the cause and character of each person’s acne, before a treatment plan is agreed together, to help acne settle gradually in line with each person’s skin and lifestyle.

Many patients have treated their acne themselves - squeezing spots, buying spot treatments, or using brightening creams. At first it looks as though the acne has settled and the skin is clearer, but in reality this kind of self-treatment damages the skin, thinning it and leaving it light-sensitive, weak and easily irritated, because such creams often contain steroids and chemicals that harm the skin. At BSL Clinic we offer laser acne programmes alongside oral medication and topical treatment, using laser to restore stronger skin, with acne doctors who treat acne at its cause.
Using a spot treatment addresses acne at the far end of the process: you wait for a spot to appear and then dab medication on it. Effective acne treatment means treating acne at its cause - from blocked pores, to reducing sebaceous gland activity, to making the skin stronger.
is worthwhile acne treatment, because "if acne is left untreated, the skin may develop scarring and pitted acne scars, and it becomes difficult to return the skin to how smooth it once was. So if you have acne, seek treatment that addresses the cause without delay.
Red and dark acne marks usually take a long time to fade on their own. In some cases the doctor may consider using an acne mark laser as well, since this type of laser works primarily on pigment.
Treating inflamed acne yourself: to begin with, avoid pressing, picking or squeezing spots, which prevents further inflammation, and medication can be used to reduce inflammation. But whenever inflamed acne becomes swollen, red or painful, or returns unusually often, you should see a doctor to find the right approach to treating inflamed acne that is appropriate.
Frequent breakouts arise from several mechanisms working together: excess oil on the skin, blockage within the pore, C. acnes bacteria, inflammation of the skin, and triggers such as hormones, stress and unsuitable skincare.
Congested pores are usually related to blocked pores and oil on the skin, which can be managed initially by cleansing the skin properly to reduce further blockage, or by choosing medical technology that helps reduce blockage and makes the skin stronger, such as the Fraxel Laser programme.
How long acne treatment takes may differ from person to person, because acne varies in severity and depends on how each person responds to treatment. Continued care may be needed for a clear result.
Treating comedonal acne without extraction can be done in some cases, particularly where things are not yet severe: products can be used to speed up skin turnover and reduce blockage. If comedonal acne is severe and may be accompanied by inflammation, however, seeing a doctor is recommended so a suitable approach can be considered.7
Hormonal acne may call for a different approach from ordinary acne, because it has to be considered whether hormonal factors are involved in how the acne forms, or whether other triggers play a part. The doctor may assess the acne and consider treatment using medication, procedures or medical technology as appropriate.4
Squeezing spots yourself is not recommended, as it can make the skin more inflamed, cause infection, and leave dark marks, red marks or acne scars - particularly with inflamed acne or acne lying deep beneath the skin. A doctor should assess whether extraction is appropriate, or which approach should be chosen instead.
When treating acne yourself brings no results, or when there is severe inflammatory acne, chronic recurring acne, or acne marks and acne scars affecting confidence in daily life, a doctor should be seen for an assessment of the cause and an appropriate treatment plan.
At BSL Clinic we use medication, treatments and a range of lasers together to care for acne, acne marks and acne scars. The doctor analyses the cause and the condition of each person’s skin before planning treatment. In some cases acne reduces, skin looks stronger, acne scars look shallower, or pores may look tighter when before-and-after photographs are compared. These outcomes are examples, however, and may differ from the results other people experience.
